Ambleside offers something surprisingly rare in West Vancouver: a lifestyle where you can genuinely leave the car at home, without giving up the outdoor lifestyle that brought you to the North Shore in the first place.

The waterfront is at the heart of it. Ambleside Beach and Park create an extraordinary stretch of oceanfront for swimming, walking, running, cycling or simply meeting friends by the water, with Stanley Park and downtown Vancouver across the inlet. In summer, the sandy beach even has a designated lifeguarded swimming area. 

And Ambleside is remarkably active. There are tennis and dedicated pickleball courts, soccer fields, a waterfront par-3 golf course, outdoor fitness equipment, a skate park and cycling connections, while West Vancouver FC makes its home here. It gives the neighbourhood an almost resort-like sporting lifestyle, except these are the places residents actually use as part of everyday life. 

The ocean is part of that active lifestyle too. Hollyburn Sailing Club has been based on Ambleside Beach since 1963, teaching generations of North Shore residents to sail and supporting everything from kayaking and rowing to stand-up paddleboarding. This isn't simply a waterfront you admire from the seawall; it's a waterfront you can actually use. 

There's even an increasingly fun beachside social scene. Grab something to eat at The Boat Shed right on Ambleside Beach, or book a waterfront sauna session at the seasonal Gatherwell pop-up and step back outside to the ocean. They are small touches, but they capture something wonderful about life here: the neighbourhood makes it very easy to get outside and enjoy where you live. 

Ambleside also becomes a gathering place for the wider community. The waterfront hosts major celebrations throughout the year, including the Community Cultural Fest and National Indigenous Peoples Day, while the nearby Ambleside waterfront comes alive for the annual Harmony Arts Festival, with ten days of live music, art, markets, food and waterfront events. 

And all of that sits beside an actual neighbourhood. Marine Drive brings cafés, restaurants, shops, groceries and services into everyday life, with Park Royal nearby. Housing ranges from condos and apartments close to the waterfront to townhomes and detached homes on the residential streets above.

The trade-off is that Ambleside is livelier and more urban than much of West Vancouver. The waterfront draws visitors, events bring activity, and buyers looking for acreage, deep privacy or a secluded mountainside setting will likely prefer another neighbourhood.

But if your version of West Coast living means walking to coffee, playing tennis or soccer, sailing after work, swimming at the beach, meeting friends by the water and still having the conveniences of everyday life within easy reach, Ambleside offers a pretty extraordinary way to live.
